Ancient Foundations of Western Culture

As the foundation of our core curriculum in history, this course introduces students to the study of history from the calling of the chosen people to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476. The first part of the class is dedicated to the Hebrew, Greek, and Roman contributions as preparation for the Incarnation. The second part of the course then examines the birth of the Church and its development in Jerusalem first, and then in a world which is culturally Greek-Hellenistic and politically Roman. In following this track, this course highlights the providential character of history and the way in which the church both flourished and fruitfully interacted with and transformed a culturally pagan world.
